Who’s ready to put the paper away for the afternoon and create a gorgeous Sculpey tealight candle holder for yourself or, to give as a gift?
This is super easy afternoon activity and with a bit of modification, can be created with children.
What you’ll need:
- 2+ Colors of Sculpey Clay (be sure to include a white or gray as a base)
- Rolling pin or Sculpey Clay Kit
- Tea Light Candle
- Razor Blade (or plastic knife if doing with children – results will vary)
- Wax Paper
- Baking Sheet
- Oven
Step 1: choose several squares of Sculpey clay – be cognizant of how the colors will mesh and blend together – orange and green side by side are rarely pretty and often turn to a mossy brown. The more white or gray in a piece, the better I find that that the sculpey tealite candle holder turns out because it separates all of the colors and acts as a base.
Step two: Roll the clay to get it ready to work. I use my sculpey tool kit roller here, but you could also use a pasta machine or a rolling pin.
Step Three: Roll your clay out in to thin rolls – I rolled them about the size of a straw in length and in thickness
Step 4: Roll the strips together – while this isn’t 100% necessary I find that it helps to start blending the rolls together and makes it look prettier finished.
Step 5: Roll your clay in to a ball, working and mixing the colors as much or as little as you’d like to.
Step 6: When the ball is how you want it, roll it in to a smooth ball – your ball should be a handful/fistful in size and smooth
Step 7: Press a tealite in to the center of your ball – press to the depth of the candle, but do not go all the way to the bottom of your ball. Make sure that the outside bottom is flat.
Step 8: Remove the tealite and place your sculpey tealite candle holder in the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes.
Step 9: Using a razor blade, cut chunks from your candle holder both towards and away from you, exposing deeper layers all the way around your candle holder.
Step 10: Bake on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper for 30 minutes at 275 degrees
