The Five Ways Planning Changes Your Life

the five ways planning changes your life blog post

Ok, I know I can be over the top when it comes to using my planner, but I’m not going to sit here and tell you that when I started using planners, the sky opened and it began sprinkling glitter and my life fell together. Though that would be a kick butt story, it would also be a lie and there’s nothing good stuff about lies.

But things did start to change for me. I’ve always been a prompt/timely person but as a double title corporate world employee, the mom of two mostly-growns, and a human being with a life, there were times when the to-dos weren’t always clear.

I knew what was going on in my life. Not just the grocery list, or just the things I needed to pick up for Gabby’s school project, but all-the-things-Brandy’s-life are right there on the weekly vertical view of my planner. If I forget something, it’s because I simply didn’t look at my planner. The time I spend looking at the things on my planner while decorating it is almost like “studying” my life. I know the content now better than ever.

I became more organized. Not just in my planner – that’s a no-duh! But something about feeling organized in my to-do’s lead me to feeling (and getting) organized in other areas of my life. My dresser drawers, my plant watering schedule, my car maintenance. It’s all pretty much on-point now.

I felt more creative. I know, I blog about creativity and I am typically a pretty creative person, but most of the time when I make something, I have no exit strategy. Decorating my planner gave me spark – it’s something I do just for me – no one else looks in my planner. Okay, I show you guys, but no one around here. Decorating my planner sparks some major creativity in my life.

I became a historian. I use my planner to document my to-dos, my lists, but I also print pictures on printer paper and glue in to squares, I note quotes that strike me, or feelings and moods and memories. These little planners have become a part of my history and I know some day my daughters will enjoy going through them.

I met a lot of really great people. There are some great planner ladies in the planner community. You’ll find them on Facebook, on Pinterest and in the planner aisle of your local Michaels. They have good hearts and are generous and have amazing ideas.

If you’re not a planner, you may be looking at these words and thinking – how in the world can doodling and putting stickers in a planner make someone so happy. I’d challenge you to try it, any planner would agree that it is more than just throwing a few decorations around – it’s really grabbing all things your life and tying them up in to a washified stickered bow.

Right now I have at least three great planners for this year and I can’t decide which one to use. I guess I just need to start. I’m sure you’re right about seeing rapid results.
