At the start of the New Year, while browsing for my 2020 planner set up, I ran across what I am nearly certain is the coolest A5 cover I’ve ever seen and knew I had to sync up with Laura Hamilton, the owner of DoodleStitchArt to learn more about her and her Etsy shop.

Laura is a decorative planner is based out of West Sacramento, California where she opened her business in March of 2017 after she left the workforce to home school her son. “My son has always been amazing, but it was a long and difficult process diagnosing and learning about his autism and figuring out how to be the mom that he needs. I turned to art to alleviate my anxiety, doodling on a sketch pad every evening to focus some of my energy. “

Her daily doodling brought comfort and after several sketchbooks, she decided to expand her creativity into the business world. As an avid sewest, she added  “stitch” to her name to reflect some of the products she planned to share with the world.

Her shop features travelers’ notebook covers made from a wide variety of materials “I consider each one of my notebook covers a work of art and I take care to design them accordingly.  I use a lot of unique materials and I draft my own patterns, so you won’t find many notebooks out there like mine.”

I asked Laura what her favorite item currently in her shop was and she shared the same item I ran across that made me fall in love with her work to begin with – this super shiny A5 sized vinyl pin display notebook cover. It’s her original design inspired by her friend’s pin display backpack. There’s a removable fabric panel that allows you to completely customize the front cover with your own enamel pins and patches. Friends, since I shared the secret enamel pin collection with my family last week, I can finally come out of secrecy with you and tell you that I LOVE enamel pins and I love planning and Laura has combined these two loves in the most unique way.

But speaking of unique, DoodleStitchArt also shares a product you may not have known you needed before you read this and you definitely won’t find many other places…. custom pinatas.

Her pinatas are in all shapes and all sizes, many custom requests from customers “Custom requests have definitely helped me grow as an artist over the lifetime of my shop” She takes custom requests for both planner covers and accessories as well as custom pinatas.

Her advice to those considering opening their own Etsy planner shop is to jump right in and to connect with other planners on social media so that you can determine their wants and needs.

Laura as a planner:

Decorative or Functional?
Decorative all the way.

What inspires you to plan?
Anxiety!  Really, it helps me calm down and feel organized.  Setting priorities makes a big difference for me so I don’t feel like I’m drowning in all of the different responsibilities bulling me in every direction.

Favorite Etsy shop?
Impossible to say!  I love so many for planner goodies, craft materials, and inspiration.

Best planner tip:
Write down your tasks in small bite-sized bits so if you don’t get it all done, you can at least feel like you have made some progress.

With the world being so digital now, how do you encourage others to use a paper planner?
They are beautiful.  And there is a magic that happens when you put things down on paper. It’s like you’ve created a seed that you are accountable for now, that you need to nurture.
